TAYLOR ELEMENTARY MURAL
“You Are a Gift”

For young students who sometimes wonder about their place in the world, perhaps thinking they are very small and maybe unimportant, learning that each and everyone of them is a very special gift could change the way they face each day. The students at Taylor Elementary, in Cedar Rapids have been blessed with a beautiful mural that is a visual lesson of their giftedness. The Matthew 25 Hub, which Salem helps support, partners with Taylor Elementary to encourage the students, and help them share their own gifts with the world.

Through the help of an artist friend of The Matthew 25 Hub, the Taylor students have a mural in the gymnasium to remind them, in art, that they are gifts. To view a seven minute inspirational video of the mural go to the following link and click on “watch video”.

WE WALKED WITH JESUS
A Lenten Bible Study and walk by Rev. Eilene Bisgrove of Pleasant Green
United Methodist Church, Durham, North Carolina

Fifty Salem members and friends walked with Jesus for 8 weeks during Lent as He felt the betrayal, suffering and death that awaited Him. Pastor Linda Bibb led us in a Bible Study using the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John on Wednesdays. The study touched our hearts and helped us to have a better understanding of all Jesus went through to save us.

Each of our followers wore a pedometer to measure their distance and were able to walk indoors at Salem on a measured path with pictures of the events. Some of our walkers walked at locations outside of Salem. We had some amazing distances and a grand total of 1,500.79 miles! Thank you all for making this project such a wonderful success.

MISSION NEWS
Peace with Justice Sunday
Sunday, May 18

The offering enables the denomination’s voice in advocating for peace and justice at home and around the world. Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the six United Methodist Special Sundays with offering, is observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Peace with Justice Sunday gifts empower compassionate people to advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for important causes, eradicate poverty, feed the hungry, mediate conflict provide health care, seek affordable housing and model nonviolence. The Special Sunday offering funds global outreach through the United Methodist General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) and annual conference-related peace with justice ministries that transform lives.

In Iowa the Board of Church & Society gives grants to ministries that meet the above guidelines. One of those ministries to receive a Grant was Matthew 25 Ministry Hub in Cedar Rapids. You can see one of the community projects at Taylor School where the Mural “You are a Gift” covers one long wall of the school gym. Other programs supported in Iowa include “Women at the Well” congregation and a restorative justice program in Rock Valley Iowa.

LIBRARY NUGGETS
There are several very inspirational selections regarding mothers this month.

1.) Chicken Soup for the Soul Celebrating Mothers and Daughters— a girl’s first model of what it means to love and be loved is her mother; a woman’s first taste of what it really means ot experience an unconditional bond is when she has a daughter. The connection between a mother and daughter is timeless and a model for all other relationships.

2.) To Mother with Love—Edited by Kevin Osborn—Selfless, steadfast, unconditional; a mother’s love is unique. Though we can never thank our mothers enough for all the years they showered us with their special brand of love, we can pay tribute to them. This is a testimonial to the unceasing love, loyalty, and understanding a mother bestows in her children.

3.) Bible Promises to Treasure for Moms—Gary Wilde—Being a good mom requires more than a pure self-effort. It means relying on the one who gives us our life with the dawning of each new day.

4.) As Tall as My Heart (A Mother’s Treasure of Love—Marjorie Holmes, Whether Marjorie writes of the loss of your first tooth or a child’s spontaneous prayer of thankfulness, she affirms what all mothers know: “No matter how tall and strong he may become, or what heights he may attain—no child ever grows beyond the reach of his mother’s heart.”

5.) Mommy Dreams— Brenda Quinn—God shares your moments of maternal joy and confusion. He understands, and He offers help. This book will likely echo some of your reflections of motherhood. It will also respond with many words from God Himself about how He feels toward you and how His heart so closely resembles the heart of a mother.
