TEEN SCENE PRODUCTIONS We have all been there. Remember: “I can’t wait to be an adult”, “I want to be able to make my own decisions”, “I can’t wait to get an apartment”, etc! But were we really prepared? Are they? What can we do to help? Today’s parents hand out cell phones, cars, etc to their teens because face it, it makes life easier for us adults. Sure the teens love it but most of the teens Lee and I have talked to both in church and out, have expressed that their greatest wish would be to spend more time with their parents. That even though they want to be independent they need some helpful direction. Our greatest opportunity is to help these teens spread their wings and fly from the nest without crashing to the ground after takeoff. OUCH! So “Teen Scene’s Real World” was born. In March we began a real world series to help teens understand the transition to adulthood and all that comes with it. We discussed the financial responsibilities of transitioning to adult status. How the burden can be lessened by having a roommate. And establishing “House Rules” to ensure respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness between any set of roommates. These same rules of respect are essential in marriage as well. The teens also worked up menus and grocery lists and took a trip to Wal-Mart to check prices during a lock in. What a “reality check”. Milk $3.50, bag of grapes $4.50...helping teens...priceless! In April we will be researching apartments and other living arrangements and the responsibilities that includes such as leases. Another field trip is planned to view apartment options. If you or anyone you know is a landlord, please contact D’Lynn Thanks again to all of those who support our youth! |
